Flow to Restore with Sam Jenkins.

This is a flow class - a class to awaken movement and rhythm in the body.

Simple, flowing movement meets slowness, awareness and relaxation.

Gently starting with mindful movement to warm up the body and prepare the mind ahead of foundational, flowing sequences combining movement with your breathing. From there we’ll spend a little time in some more energetic movements and positions before slowing down towards finishing with a guided relaxation, the perfect opportunity to relax and restore body and mind.

  • My journey into yoga was initially to manage sports stiffness and injuries (running and triathlon!). Slowly, my body started to change, and, over time, it became clear that moving my body with awareness, learning to listen to how it actually felt, and connecting more to stillness were supporting me in ways beyond the purely physical. Only later looking back was it clear that yoga helped me both manage the stress of working as a Chartered Accountant in different, dynamic settings, and ultimately to cultivate just enough awareness to recognise the ways I was living my life were escalating towards Burnout. That led to more yoga and to Therapy, and together with COVID, leaving a job and several other life changes, created the opportunity to train in Power Yoga at The Power Yoga Company, London in 2021.

As I’ve taught yoga in different studios, 1-2-1 and with small groups, I’ve understood that my strength lies in giving people a space to slow down, rather than speed up. It seems to me that for many people in the modern world there are already ample opportunities to be faster. So now my classes focus on finding a balance between just enough flowing movement to experience an energy shift, and encouraging development of awareness, acceptance and recharging through rest.

Alongside teaching yoga I’m a self-employed therapist, trained in Cognitive Hypnotherapy. My therapy work helps me bring acceptance and compassion to my yoga teaching, and the “hypnotherapy” part of my skillset helps with guiding people to relax as we wind down yoga sessions.

  • Flow Yoga refers to the styles of yoga characterized by stringing postures (asanas) together so that you move from one to another, seamlessly, with a big focus on your breath - your life force. In flow yoga styles you will feel the benefits of lengthening, twisting, balancing, bending, strengthening, reconnecting and revitalising your body and mind. There are several styles incorporated into flow yoga including Vinyasa, Hatha, Ashtanga and Dru yoga, each one it’s own sacred practice and offering something different for the yogi’s body, mind and spirit.

While yoga is an excellent way to keep your body healthy, mobile and strong (especially your core), it is so much more than a form of physical exercise.

The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit root “Yuj’ which means to join or unite, and in the old Hindu yogic scriptures the practice of yoga is seen as both a discipline and an art form that connects the individual consciousness with the universal consciousness, meaning we feel more in harmony in our own body-mind-spirit, and that we as human beings remember how connected we are to each other and to the rest of nature.

In a world where we see things in separate categories (body or mind, out-there or in-here, work or rest, them or us etc), that feeling of union is pretty amazing, even if it starts as just a feeling for a fleeting hour on the mat. Yoga is a wholeness practice, for every body and every mind, and that’s also why no one can be bad at it.
