With ‘Philosophy Café’ we aim to ignite our minds to deep thinking. To consider, reconsider and seed new thoughts. This is a group which offers a meeting place for those wishing to engage in deep debate, but also those who are wishing to meet others and spark up meaningful conversation.

Each month we introduce concept, thought and perception to evoke a strong dialogue , allowing all to participate or to sit, consider and enjoy. Like the great philosophers of the past, we reintroduce a small space for expansive thought.

Come join us for a companionable reading experience at Open House. Readers bring their own book, there is no assigned reading, we read together at our own pace. The group offers an opportunity for focused, quiet reading time - an introvert friendly social meet up, no small talk required.

Over the 2 hours the first 30 minutes would be used to settle in, get a drink and find a comfortable space. An hour of silent reading would follow and then the last 30 minutes given over to chat or keep reading.

Community drumming is the most inclusive and accessible way to make joyous music with others.  At heart, we are rhythmical beings and drumming is a very natural way to connect with our innate musicianship.  

In this session you will have the opportunity to play African drums, Brazilian percussion and instruments made from junk as we raise the roof with our co-created beats.  

All instruments are provided and there is no need for previous musical experience. Come along, meet new people, and find out just how nourishing music-making can be.

Each meetup, we take it in turn to lead a creative class. One meetup, Pip Mactaggart shared her watercolor technique, and on other meetups we painted outside with Samuel Rignall, and explored drawing from the imagination with Shaun Friend.

Latin Voices Trio is a celebration of the music of Latin America fused together with jazz, soul and contemporary music. Latin Voices are brought together and led by Black British female jazz influenced vocalist Helen Gayle.

Inspired by artistes such as Tania Maria, Flora Purim, Airto Moria and Chick Corea, Helen uses these influences to create infectious rhythms, driving grooves and space for improvisation and interaction.

Rowan Rheingans is an award-winning fiddle player, banjoist, songwriter and theatre-maker regarded as one of the foremost innovators in the English folk scene. Best known for her work with acclaimed bands Lady Maisery and The Rheingans Sisters, Rowan will perform a clutch of solo gigs this autumn, embracing the hibernating season with an intimate show of reimagined songs, emerging sonic adventures and musical connection in the warmth of small venues. A rare treat!

Rowan has won two BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, is a six-times nominee, and her courageous one woman theatre show Dispatches on the Red Dress won a Fringe First award after a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe. In 2021, Rowan was awarded the Paul Hamlyn Award for composers.

Join us as we get into the festive spirit and create our own decorative winter wreaths. Zanna from The Peak Garden will share floristry techniques as we use foliage from her flower farm in Hope. Along with locally-sourced pine-cones, seed heads, feathers, dried grasses, Zanna will demonstrate different methods for us all to create festive wreaths together.

The Peak Garden are committed to using sustainable, compostable and reusable resources. Along with flowers grown at their flower farm in Hope, we will use willow wreath bases and garden moss, both of which are sustainable and long-lasting.

“An immersive album of depth and subtlety” - Folk Radio UK

Liz Hanks is a cellist, composer and collaborator based in Sheffield.  She has worked with an impressive and varied array of high-profile artists including performing and recording with Richard Hawley, Liam Gallagher, Self Esteem, Martin Simpson, Pulp, Thea Gilmore, Cara Dillon, Jason Singh and Jasdeep Singh Degun.

Based on the local and natural history of her neighbourhood in Sheffield, Liz Hanks’ ‘Land’ album (Hudson Records) explores both the loss of nature in the urban environment and forgotten natural worlds. She discovered that the now urban area of Meersbrook was once a beautiful valley called ‘Rush Dale’. Inspired by reading written accounts of this lost valley she created ‘Land’ in remembrance of these lost times and places.
