This session is for young people who have been playing music for a few years and would like to be creative, play with others and work toward performance. Instrumental skills are essential to join this group. The sessions will involve teaching of traditional tunes, creating our own music, learning how to accompany the tunes, harmonisation, improvisation and arranging for performance. The Youth Folk Band sessions at Open House are for any young people who are wanting to get into music and enjoy playing with others. Folk music offers a simple and accessible way for people to play acoustic instruments music together and to be really creative too. We will be exploring some beautiful traditional tunes and also we use the term ‘folk music’ quite loosely, essentially referring to tunes and songs that can be easily understood by the group so that everyone can enjoy playing together. So don’t be put off by the name… Folk music is a wonderful forum for being musical and connecting with others.
All the sessions are offered in the same spirit:
Playing music by ear without the need for reading music
Learning how to play with others
Discovering new instruments and ways to be musical
Being creative and learning how to improvise

We expect FunFolk to be more popular with young people aged 12-16 although there are no strict age limits to the session and whether a young person wants to be a part of the group will depend on age, ability and confidence.
