Ancient Wisdom, Modern World: An Exploration of Yoga Philosophy, Movement & Breath with Emily Kaye & Ryan Spence.

Emily and Ryan are back(!) for the second part of their Ancient Wisdom, Modern World workshop series, weaving together yoga philosophy with embodied practices of movement and breath.

This series of workshops is designed to offer curious students of yoga a meaningful opportunity to deepen their personal practice by exploring the rich and expansive tradition of yoga, that extends far beyond the physical postures.

On 27th February we will continue to explore the Yamas (ethical restraints) set out in Patanjali’s Eight Limbs of Yoga, diving into the principle of Satya - truthfulness.  (Each session is designed to function as a stand-alone offering - don’t be put off if you didn’t make it to previous sessions.)

Guided by Ryan and Emily—both dedicated practitioners and eternal students of yoga— Ancient Wisdom, Modern World creates an environment where participants can explore, inquire, and connect with the deeper layers of yoga. Through discussion, guided practices, and space for personal inquiry, we’ll discover how yoga’s ancient wisdom can be understood not just conceptually, but applied to modern life.

This workshop is ideal for those wanting to:

  • Deepen their yoga practice

  • Explore the connection between mind, body, and breath

  • Cultivate personal insight and transformation

No experience needed; all levels are welcome.

  • Ryan (RYT-500) is a Sheffield-based vinyasa teacher, integrative life coach and former BigLaw lawyer. Trained in Singapore (200-hour, 2020, with Blair Hughes) and Thailand (300-hour, Aligned Yoga with Briohny Smyth), he teaches strong yet mindful, breath-led classes—clear cues, creative sequences and purposeful playlists that build heat and strength while settling the mind.

Drawing on his training as a coach, Ryan weaves intention-setting and practical mindset tools so students at every level feel seen, supported and safe to progress. He’s known for a warm, inclusive room that welcomes busy professionals looking to reconnect.

Off the mat, he’s usually lifting weights, buying more books than he’ll ever read, or running off-road.

  • Emily is a Sheffield-based yoga teacher, with ten years of teaching experience. Trained originally in vinyasa & hatha yoga, Emily has studied yoga, breathwork and yoga philosophy in the UK, India and beyond.

With a strong belief that there is no one-size-fits-all approach in yoga, Emily teaches a variety of different styles. Whether a dynamic vinyasa class or a deep and meditative stillness practice, Emily’s classes are warm, engaging and welcoming.

    Some words from Emily:

“My classes are playful but grounded, encouraging students to have a strong awareness of their breath. I believe that yoga can change the world and my goal is to strengthen the body and quiet the mind, for happier, healthier humans. We spend too much time rushing around, with our brains chattering away. For me yoga is about slowing all of this down, being more present, finding joy in movement and living more fully. "

Emily is the Yoga and Wholebeing Lead at Open House. When she’s not at Open House, Emily’s love of the outdoors takes her off into the hills, or you’ll find her pottering in the garden.
