Be transported into the rich world of Indian music, an ancient artistic tradition brought to life through the ornate and melodic violin playing of Kamalbir Singh accompanied by profound, soulful tabla rhythms played by John Ball. An evening of contemplative improvisation and creative spontaneity.

  • Kamalbir Singh is a multi-talented, Sheffield-based critically-acclaimed violinist, singer and teacher. He has been described as an artist whose music depicts the unfathomable depth of human emotion through his poignant and mellifluous melodic playing. Kamalbir learnt classical music from his father, Raghbir Singh and at a young age won the highly prestigious All India Gold Medal Award for his achievement. He brings both technical brilliance and soulful depth to his performances.

    After moving to the UK, he became the very first Indian classical musician to perform in the West End at the Shaftesbury Theatre. He is a prolific composer having written for theatre, musicals and Indian films.

  • John Ball is an experienced performer and teacher of the North Indian, HIndustani style of music, specialising in the tabla as well the 100 stringed santoor. He has been performing on the tabla over three decades and has studied with some of the legendary tabla maestros in India including Ustad Faiyaz Khan and Pandit Yogesh Samsi. John is a dedicated educator, teaching tabla at the University of Sheffield and for South Asian Arts in Leeds. He also is a key member of innovative Sheffield based global music band Mishra.
