  • After early studies on violin and piano, Andrea studied composition under William Mathias at Bangor University and went on to complete a PGCE in Belfast. Following a year’s peripatetic teaching in her native Northern Ireland, Andrea moved to North Tyneside, eventually taking up the post of Head of Music in a comprehensive school in Wallsend. Whilst in the North East she also acted as MD of Ashington Operatic Society and conducted one of North Tyneside’s Youth Orchestras.

A seven-year stay in Hong Kong where she was employed as Head of Music in a vibrant international school, ended in 2001 when Andrea returned to England, settling in Hathersage. She then divided her time between caring for her family, working as a violin tutor for Sheffield Music Services, teaching classroom music part-time and involvement in a variety of music groups throughout North Derbyshire. She was rehearsal and concert pianist for Hathersage Choir for many years and then accepted the position as their Musical Director. She regularly plays the organ in Hathersage Methodist Chapel and can often be heard locally as part of a folk duo with her husband, Chris.

Andrea has just retired from classroom teaching following eight years in Chapel-en-le Frith High School and more recently as a Year 6 teacher in Hathersage St. Michael’s. During a career spanning over forty years, Andrea has conducted many choirs. She believes that singing should be part of the fabric of all music teaching and at the heart of every musical experience and is very excited to be involved in this community venture at Open House.

  • For Matt, music is a way for people to be together.  He has worked as a community musician since 2003 and has made music with people from all walks of life in community centres, schools, hospitals, festivals, care homes, special schools.  From experience, Matt knows how music can build, shape and transform community.

Alongside the music-making he is offering at Open House, Matt leads the Grindleford Carnival Samba Band, teaches ukulele, whistle and creative electronic music at Hope Valley College. He is a music and neurodiversity specialist and leads training and coaching for staff in Sheffield SEND schools and collaborates with autism, learning disability and dementia care and education services around the UK and internationally.

Matt is a multi-instrumentalist and plays percussion, ukulele, whistle, guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, handpan and electronic music. His current performance projects are Opposable Drums, a duo specialising in live music for ecstatic dance, and playing bouzouki in a folk duo.  Matt loves improvisational and responsive music making and is excited to be offering this as part of the music as medicine programme at Open House.
